Audio-only listening was supposed to be the entire point of podcasting. Increasingly, it isn’t — a majority of the format’s biggest shows are now filmed, and the video versions are quietly overtaking audio downloads.
Podcasting’s original appeal was that it asked nothing of your eyes: a format for commutes, chores, and workouts, consumed entirely through earbuds. That’s no longer the whole story. Major platforms now report that a majority of listening sessions for top shows happen with the video feed open, often on a television or tablet rather than a phone in a pocket.
The shift has reordered how shows get made. Studios that once consisted of a table and a few microphones are being rebuilt with multi-camera rigs, lighting, and set design, because clips cut from the video feed — not the audio file — have become the primary way new listeners discover a show in the first place.
Advertisers followed the eyeballs
Video ad reads command noticeably higher rates than audio-only spots, giving hosts a direct financial incentive to film every episode regardless of whether their audience actually watches. That’s pulled significant production budgets away from pure audio and toward hybrid formats that look more like a low-cost talk show than a traditional podcast.

Purists worry the shift will squeeze out the low-overhead, audio-only shows that made the format accessible to almost anyone with a laptop. For now, though, the biggest shows in the business are betting that a podcast without a camera is a podcast leaving money and reach on the table.
