Why Live TV Events Are Making a Comeback in the Streaming Era

Award shows, finales, and live music specials were supposed to be the first casualties of streaming’s video-on-demand era. Instead, platforms are spending heavily to make live television feel like an event again.

Why Live TV Events Are Making a Comeback in the Streaming Era
Live broadcast events are drawing some of the largest simultaneous audiences streaming platforms have ever recorded.

For most of the last decade, the story of television was a shift away from the shared, appointment-viewing broadcast and toward on-demand libraries watched whenever a viewer felt like it. Streaming services built their entire pitch around that flexibility. Now several of the same companies are investing in exactly the opposite: live sports packages, live award shows, and one-night-only specials designed to be watched at a specific hour, together with everyone else.

The economics are straightforward. A live event can’t be skipped, binged later, or watched on mute in the background — it commands full attention for a fixed window, which makes it unusually valuable to advertisers and unusually good at driving subscriber sign-ups timed to a single date.

Social media turned watching into the event

Executives increasingly point to a second driver: the second-screen conversation happening on social platforms in real time. A show loses much of its cultural pull if it’s watched on a staggered schedule, because the discourse around it — the jokes, the reactions, the arguments — has already moved on by the time a delayed viewer catches up.

“On-demand won the battle for convenience. Live won the battle for conversation. Turns out we still want both.”

None of this replaces the on-demand library, which remains the core of the streaming business. But the renewed appetite for live events suggests the industry has settled into a hybrid model — deep, flexible catalogs most nights, punctuated by a handful of dates each year when everyone tunes in at once, the way they always used to.
