Why Europe’s Combustion Engine Advantage Didn’t Transfer to Electric Vehicles

European automakers built decades of global dominance around internal combustion engineering, and the industry’s forced pivot to electric vehicles has exposed how much of that expertise doesn’t transfer directly, opening space for newer competitors.

Why Europe’s Combustion Engine Advantage Didn’t Transfer to Electric Vehicles
European automakers are retooling factories built around decades of combustion-engine expertise.

European automakers built global market leadership over decades around deep engineering expertise in internal combustion engines and precision manufacturing, an advantage that has proven considerably less transferable to electric vehicle production than industry executives initially expected, since EV manufacturing rewards different capabilities, particularly battery chemistry and software integration.

Newer entrants to the auto industry, including several manufacturers without decades of combustion-engine legacy investment, have moved more quickly on software-defined vehicle architecture and battery cost reduction, competitive advantages that don’t depend on the specific expertise European manufacturers spent generations building.

Legacy manufacturing investment has become harder to fully repurpose

European manufacturers face the added challenge of retooling factories and retraining a workforce built around combustion-engine production, a costly and time-consuming transition that newer competitors building electric-only factories from scratch don’t have to manage.

“Decades of combustion engineering expertise turned out to be a genuine asset for one era and a real transition cost for the next one.”

With European manufacturers now investing heavily in battery and software capability to close the gap, most industry analysts expect the competitive rebalancing to continue playing out over the next several years, as legacy manufacturers work to convert their remaining advantages in brand strength and manufacturing scale into a genuine electric vehicle turnaround.
