Meet the Startups Built Remote-First From Day One

A growing cohort of startup founders are choosing to incorporate and stay headquartered outside traditional hubs entirely, building fully distributed companies from day one rather than treating remote work as an exception to an office-first default.

Meet the Startups Built Remote-First From Day One
A growing share of startups are built as fully distributed companies from their very first hire.

A meaningful share of new startups are now built as fully distributed companies from inception, with founders explicitly designing hiring, communication, and company culture around a remote-first model rather than defaulting to a physical headquarters and treating remote employees as an accommodation.

Founders building this way cite access to a much larger global talent pool, since hiring isn’t constrained to commuting distance from a single office, as one of the model’s clearest advantages, particularly for early-stage companies competing for specialized talent against better-funded rivals in traditional tech hubs.

Building culture without a shared office takes deliberate effort

Founders running distributed-first companies generally describe company culture and cohesion as something that has to be built deliberately through explicit practices, rather than emerging naturally the way it might in a shared office, requiring more intentional investment in communication norms and occasional in-person gatherings than an office-based team might need.

“An office gives you culture by default, for better or worse. Distributed-first means you have to actually design it on purpose.”

With remote work tools and norms continuing to mature and investors increasingly comfortable backing distributed-first teams, the model appears likely to keep growing as a legitimate default path for new companies, rather than a compromise adopted only when an office-based model isn’t feasible.
