How African Genomics Research Is Closing a Major Global Diversity Gap

Universities and research institutions across the continent are training a growing share of the world’s genomics researchers, building local expertise that reduces dependence on sending African biological samples abroad for analysis.

How African Genomics Research Is Closing a Major Global Diversity Gap
A growing number of genomics research and training centers have opened across the continent in recent years.

A wave of new genomics research centers and training programs has opened across the continent over the past decade, building local capacity to sequence and analyze genetic material that historically had to be shipped abroad to laboratories in Europe or North America, a practice that delayed research timelines and raised long-standing concerns about data ownership and benefit-sharing.

This locally-trained research capacity has proven particularly valuable for studying genetic diversity and disease patterns specific to African populations, which have historically been significantly underrepresented in global genomic databases built predominantly from European-ancestry populations, a gap that has real consequences for how well genetic medicine works across different populations.

Closing the database gap benefits global genomic medicine broadly

Researchers note that African populations contain some of the greatest human genetic diversity found anywhere globally, meaning better representation in genomic databases doesn’t just benefit local African health research but strengthens the underlying science of genomic medicine for populations worldwide.

“Global genomic databases have a real diversity gap. Building local African research capacity is directly closing that gap, which benefits the whole field, not just researchers here.”

With additional training programs and research infrastructure continuing to expand, the continent’s genomics research capacity is expected to keep growing, reducing historical dependence on foreign laboratories while strengthening the global scientific understanding of human genetic diversity more broadly.
