EV Charging Is Finally Getting Fast — The Infrastructure Is Still Catching Up

A new generation of faster-charging batteries is finally addressing one of the most persistent complaints about electric vehicles, with some new models now able to add significant range in the time it takes to grab a coffee.

EV Charging Is Finally Getting Fast — The Infrastructure Is Still Catching Up
Newer battery chemistries and charging infrastructure are significantly cutting EV charging times.

Charging speed has consistently ranked among the top consumer concerns holding back broader electric vehicle adoption, and newer battery chemistries combined with higher-power charging infrastructure have begun meaningfully closing the gap with the time it takes to refuel a conventional gasoline vehicle, with some new models capable of adding a substantial range in roughly the time of a short break.

Achieving these faster charging times requires more than just the vehicle’s battery technology; it also depends on charging stations capable of delivering enough power, a piece of infrastructure that remains unevenly distributed, with many public charging networks still built around older, slower charging standards.

Infrastructure rollout is the pacing factor now, not the battery

Automakers report that vehicle-side charging technology has genuinely outpaced the public charging infrastructure needed to take full advantage of it in many regions, meaning a car theoretically capable of a very fast charge often can’t achieve that speed unless it happens to be at one of the newer, high-power charging stations.

“The car can charge faster than almost any charger you’ll actually find on a road trip today. Building the infrastructure to match is the slower half of this problem.”

With charging network operators continuing to invest in higher-power stations and newer vehicles increasingly built to take advantage of them, the practical charging experience for a growing share of EV owners is expected to keep closing the gap with gasoline refueling times, even as full infrastructure parity across all regions remains a multi-year buildout.
