Why Companies Are Already Preparing for Encryption-Breaking Quantum Computers

Security teams are racing to adopt encryption methods designed to withstand future quantum computers, even though such machines capable of breaking current encryption don’t yet exist, because sensitive data stolen today could still be readable once they do.

Why Companies Are Already Preparing for Encryption-Breaking Quantum Computers
Quantum computing research continues to advance, driving early adoption of quantum-resistant encryption standards.

A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically break the encryption algorithms that currently protect most of the world’s digital communications and stored data, a capability that doesn’t yet exist at the scale required but that many security experts believe could arrive within the next decade or two, prompting organizations to begin migrating to newer, quantum-resistant encryption standards well in advance.

The urgency stems from a specific threat model researchers call harvest-now-decrypt-later: adversaries can intercept and store encrypted data today, even without the ability to break it currently, and simply wait until quantum computing capability matures enough to decrypt it retroactively, meaning sufficiently sensitive data encrypted today could still be exposed years in the future.

Migration is a genuinely massive undertaking

Migrating to new encryption standards across the enormous installed base of existing hardware, software, and communication protocols represents a massive, multi-year undertaking, since nearly every system that currently relies on standard encryption needs to be identified, updated, and tested against the new quantum-resistant algorithms.

“We don’t need the quantum computer to exist today to be at risk today. Data encrypted right now could be exposed the moment that computer does exist.”

With national standards bodies having already finalized several post-quantum encryption algorithms, the industry’s focus has shifted from algorithm selection to the considerably harder logistical challenge of actually migrating existing systems before quantum computing capability advances far enough to make the threat concrete rather than theoretical.
