F1’s Expanding Global Calendar Is Testing Driver Welfare and Sustainability Goals

A wave of new races in previously untapped markets has reshaped the sport’s calendar, forcing organizers to balance record commercial growth against driver complaints over an increasingly grueling travel schedule.

F1’s Expanding Global Calendar Is Testing Driver Welfare and Sustainability Goals
New street circuits in emerging markets have added significant commercial value to the racing calendar.

The sport’s calendar has expanded significantly over the past several seasons, adding races in markets with limited or no prior history hosting the sport, driven by substantial hosting fees and a broader strategic push to grow the sport’s global commercial footprint beyond its traditional European base.

Drivers and team personnel have increasingly voiced concerns about the physical toll of a calendar that now regularly exceeds twenty races across a single season, with condensed travel schedules between distant continents leaving little recovery time between events at the height of the season.

Commercial growth and sustainability goals are pulling in different directions

The expanded, geographically scattered calendar also sits in tension with the sport’s own stated sustainability commitments, since a schedule that bounces between distant continents rather than grouping races by region generates considerably more logistics-related emissions than a more geographically clustered calendar would.

“Every new market wants a race. Every driver wants a schedule that doesn’t wreck their body by August. Those two goals are increasingly in tension.”

With hosting contracts for several new races already signed years in advance, calendar rationalization aimed at improving both driver welfare and calendar sustainability remains a stated goal for organizers, though the substantial hosting fees new markets continue to offer make any near-term reduction in overall race count unlikely.
