Load Management Isn’t Going Away. The League Is Still Figuring Out the Rules Around It

Load management, once a niche strategy for aging stars, has become standard practice across the league, forcing broadcasters and ticket buyers to accept that a marquee player sitting out a nationally televised game is now a routine occurrence.

Load Management Isn’t Going Away. The League Is Still Figuring Out the Rules Around It
Rest and load management for star players has become a routine part of the modern regular season.

Sports science research linking cumulative fatigue to injury risk has convinced most front offices and medical staffs that resting healthy stars for a portion of the regular season reduces the odds of a serious injury during the playoffs, when the games actually matter most for a franchise’s championship prospects.

The league has introduced rules specifically aimed at limiting how often star players sit out nationally televised games, responding to complaints from broadcast partners and fans who’ve paid full price for tickets only to find a marquee player held out for rest rather than injury.

The tension between health science and the fan experience isn’t resolved

Team medical staffs generally stand firmly behind the practice as sound injury prevention backed by real data, while acknowledging the genuine tension it creates with fans and broadcasters who reasonably expect to see a team’s best players on a night they’ve specifically paid to attend or tune in for.

“The medical case for rest is genuinely strong. It just happens to directly conflict with what a fan buying a ticket reasonably expects to see.”

With the new attendance rules only partially addressing the underlying tension, the league appears likely to keep adjusting the specific policy details in coming seasons as it continues searching for a balance between player health and the in-arena and broadcast experience fans are paying for.
