Inside the Quiet Return of Vinyl to Mainstream Music Retail

Streaming was supposed to end physical music for good. Instead, record pressing plants are running at capacity, and big-box retailers are giving vinyl the shelf space they once handed to CDs.

Inside the Quiet Return of Vinyl to Mainstream Music Retail
Record stores that survived the CD-to-streaming shift are now expanding floor space rather than shrinking it.

Vinyl’s comeback is no longer a nostalgia story. Annual sales figures have climbed for close to two decades, and the format now regularly outsells CDs in several major markets, a reversal almost nobody predicted when digital downloads first arrived. Pressing plants that were mothballed in the 1990s have been recommissioned, and new ones have opened just to keep up with backlogged orders.

What’s changed is who’s buying. Industry surveys consistently find a large share of vinyl buyers are under 35 — listeners who grew up entirely on streaming and are now paying a premium for a format slower and more expensive than anything on their phone. Retailers say the appeal isn’t audio fidelity so much as ritual: a record forces you to sit with one album, sleeve art in hand, rather than skip through a playlist.

Retail is rebuilding around the format

Chains that reduced music sections to a single aisle a decade ago have started reversing course, adding listening stations and exclusive pressings timed to release weeks. Independent shops, once seen as an endangered format themselves, report some of their strongest years on record, helped by a wave of reissues and colored-vinyl variants aimed squarely at collectors.

“Nobody buys a record because it sounds better than a phone speaker. They buy it because it makes the album feel like an object again.”

Manufacturing bottlenecks remain the biggest constraint on growth — there are still far fewer working presses worldwide than the demand would support, and popular titles routinely sell out before a second run can be pressed. For now, that scarcity is if anything reinforcing the format’s appeal rather than undercutting it.
