Sanct Social, the Singapore-registered social app for close friends and family, released Episode 9 of its short film series, "Two mothers.", on YouTube on Saturday 7 November, the eve of Deepavali. The film follows Keisha, who works in Singapore, across the Causeway to the Johor Bahru home of her friend's mother for the kolam and the lamps, and ends with two mothers who have never met, one in Johor and one in Jakarta, speaking in the same chat. Along the way it shows, step by step, the four things that are new in Sanct Social version 1.2, on the App Store since 25 October: talking to Sancty and planning the day in Schedule, communities with a guest link for someone outside your friends list, sleep music on the sleep screen, and Re-live, a room for your memories. Every app screen in the film is the real app. The company's Deepavali greeting goes out with it: Happy Deepavali to everyone celebrating this weekend.

SINGAPORE – Sanct Social, the Singapore-registered social app for close friends and family, released the ninth episode of its short film series on YouTube on Saturday 7 November. “Two mothers.” runs under two minutes, has no spoken lines, and takes place on the day it comes out: Deepavali eve.

Episode 8, released last month, ended with a mother from Johor at Keisha’s door in Singapore with a tiffin carrier. Episode 9 is the first festival Keisha spends with that family, and the first time her own mother in Jakarta and the mother in Johor speak to each other.

What the film is about

On Friday night Keisha tells Sancty, the small companion inside the app, that she is going to Johor the next day, and sets her day in Schedule. On Saturday she takes the bus across the Causeway, forty minutes the other way from Episode 8. At the house she kneels beside her friend Rivani to draw the kolam in rice flour, and Rivani’s mother hands her a folded kurti: she had one for Keisha too. At dusk the three of them light the lamps. Rivani makes a community for the evening and sends a guest link, so Keisha’s mother in Jakarta can see the lamps without being anyone’s friend yet. In that chat, one mother thanks the other for feeding her daughter. The reply: “Next year, both of you.”

“Episode 8 was about who comes when your family cannot. This one is about what happens after: a friend’s family becomes a little bit yours, and the two mothers finally talk,” said Mr Sion Abednego, founder of Sanct Social. “Everything the film shows is in the app today. We wanted people to finish it knowing exactly what to tap. And to everyone lighting the lamps this weekend, from all of us at Sanct Social: Happy Deepavali.”

What is new in Sanct Social 1.2, and how to use it

1. Talk to Sancty, and plan your day. Purpose: a companion you can tell about your day, and a list that turns into reminders. How: in Sancty’s room, type or speak what is on your mind. Tap “Daily schedule”, add items with a time, and tap “Save & enable reminders”. The app sends a bell at each time; the lock screen only says what kind of plan it is, never your own words.

2. Communities with a guest invite. Purpose: a place for a group, with a door for someone who is not on your friends list yet. How: open Communities and create one, then invite friends from your list; they accept or decline privately. For anyone else, tap “Invite with QR or link”, choose “Whole community” or one room, and share the link or the QR code. New people see pandas, not names, until they are accepted.

3. Sleep music. Purpose: a sleep screen that also helps you fall asleep. How: on Sancty’s sleep screen choose Sleep, tap the music button, pick one of five tracks (all free, including Paper Lantern), and choose when it stops: 15, 30 or 60 minutes, or all night. Your friends see that you are sleeping.

4. Re-live, a room for your memories. Purpose: the moments you keep, in a room you can walk into. How: from The Verse open Re-live, take your album from the shelf and sit in the reading chair. Open a person’s album, turn the pages, tap “Frame a photo” and choose the one to put on the wall.

The same update brings the Toko, where Sancty’s look and the app icon can be changed, and two optional Premium plans. The film does not show them; the free app is the film.

Why these features together

A plan for the day, a group with a door for one more person, a night’s sleep, and a room where the day is kept: in that order, the four features are the shape of the film. Sanct Social is built for the people who are still there for you, and this episode is about the people who become that, one festival at a time.

About the film and the app

“Two mothers.” is the ninth episode of the Sanct Social story on YouTube. Every app screen in it comes from Sanct Social version 1.2 as it is on the App Store today, changed only for the characters’ names, words, photos and times. Sanct Social is free with no ads, available for iPhone on the App Store in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia and in nine more countries including the Philippines, Vietnam, India and Japan, in English, Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Indonesia and Hindi; the Android version is not ready yet. More than 1,000 people are already on the platform.

Sanct Social wishes everyone celebrating a Happy Deepavali.
