Global Molten Salt Solar Energy Market Set to Hit USD 61 Billion by 2034 at 22% CAGR

By Newswires
August 20, 2026 4 Min Read

According to a new report from Intel Market Research, the global Molten Salt Solar Energy Thermal Storage and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) market was valued at USD 10 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 61 billion by 2034, growing at a robust CAGR of 22% during the forecast period (2025–2034). This rapid expansion is driven by accelerating net-zero commitments, advances in high-temperature molten-salt technologies, and rising investment in dispatchable renewable-energy infrastructure.

What is Molten-Salt Solar Energy Thermal Storage?

Molten-salt thermal storage is a high-temperature energy storage technology used primarily in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. It captures and stores solar thermal energy in molten salt, typically a mixture of sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate, allowing electricity generation to continue after sunlight is no longer available.

In CSP systems, mirrors concentrate solar radiation onto a receiver, heating molten salt to temperatures exceeding 560°C. The heated salt is stored in insulated tanks and later used to generate steam that drives turbines. This enables CSP facilities to provide dispatchable electricity and supports longer-duration energy storage compared with conventional photovoltaic systems.

Key Market Drivers

1. Global Decarbonization and Energy Security Targets

Governments across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific are implementing ambitious net-zero strategies that require reliable low-carbon power generation. Molten-salt-based CSP can provide 8–12 hours of uninterrupted power, helping reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants and supporting grid stability as renewable penetration increases.

2. Technological Breakthroughs and Cost Reductions

Advances in molten-salt chemistry and CSP system design are improving efficiency and operating temperatures. New nitrate-chloride salt blends can enable temperatures above 600°C, while innovations in solar receivers, mirrors, and thermal systems are helping reduce project costs.

The 2025 Noor Energy 1 expansion in the United Arab Emirates, cited in the report, demonstrates the potential for extended power delivery using molten-salt storage.

Market Challenges

  • High Capital Expenditure – A typical 150 MW CSP plant with 12 hours of storage can require more than USD 1.2 billion in upfront investment, increasing financing requirements.
  • Competition from Battery Storage – Declining lithium-ion battery costs are increasing competitive pressure, particularly for short-duration storage applications.
  • Technical and Logistical Complexities – Maintaining molten salts above 550°C requires corrosion-resistant materials and sophisticated freeze-protection systems, while transporting large quantities of salt to remote sites can create logistical challenges.

Emerging Opportunities

Hybrid CSP configurations combining solar thermal systems with batteries, renewable-fuel gas turbines, or offshore wind offer new opportunities for flexible and dispatchable energy generation.

Additional opportunities include:

  • Green Hydrogen Production – High-temperature thermal energy can support hydrogen production and related power-to-X applications.
  • Industrial Process Heat – CSP systems can supply thermal energy for desalination, mining, mineral processing, and other industrial applications.
  • Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems – CSP can be integrated with photovoltaic, battery, and gas-based systems to improve reliability and grid flexibility.
