How the Middle East Is Making Desalination Cheaper and Cleaner

Desalination technology has become essential infrastructure across much of the Middle East, and new energy-efficient designs are lowering the cost of producing fresh water from seawater in one of the world’s most water-scarce regions.

How the Middle East Is Making Desalination Cheaper and Cleaner
Newer desalination technology has significantly reduced the energy cost of producing fresh water from seawater.

Countries across the Middle East, among the most water-scarce regions in the world, rely heavily on desalinated seawater to meet a substantial share of freshwater demand, and newer membrane and energy-recovery technologies have meaningfully reduced the energy required per unit of fresh water produced compared to older desalination methods.

That efficiency improvement matters considerably given how energy-intensive desalination has historically been, and several countries have begun pairing new desalination capacity directly with solar power generation, aiming to reduce both the cost and the carbon footprint of producing the fresh water their populations and agriculture depend on.

Brine disposal remains an unresolved environmental concern

Desalination produces a concentrated saline byproduct that must be disposed of, typically returned to the sea, and marine researchers have raised ongoing concerns about the cumulative environmental effect of large volumes of this brine discharge on coastal marine ecosystems near major desalination facilities.

“We’ve made real progress on the energy side of desalination. The brine disposal question is the piece of the environmental picture that still needs more attention.”

With regional water demand continuing to grow and desalination capacity expanding to meet it, addressing the brine disposal question alongside the energy efficiency gains already achieved is increasingly viewed as the next major frontier for making the region’s water supply strategy more fully sustainable.
