A push to unify the sport’s fragmented governing bodies and streamline its cluttered tournament calendar has gained fresh momentum, though decades of competing institutional interests have derailed similar reform efforts before.
Professional tennis is governed by multiple separate organizations covering the men’s tour, the women’s tour, the four major championships, and national federations, a fragmented structure that has repeatedly complicated efforts to make coordinated decisions about scheduling, prize money distribution, and rule changes that require buy-in across all these separate bodies simultaneously.
Reform proposals aimed at consolidating governance or at least dramatically improving coordination between these bodies have surfaced periodically for years, generally driven by frustration among top players over calendar conflicts and revenue distribution that a more unified structure could theoretically resolve more efficiently.
Each governing body has its own reasons to resist consolidation
Previous consolidation efforts have consistently stalled because each governing body has its own independent revenue streams, institutional identity, and stakeholders with genuine reasons to resist ceding authority to a unified structure, even when most parties agree in principle that fragmentation creates real inefficiencies.
