Television ratings and attendance for women’s professional basketball have grown substantially over the past several seasons, driven by a combination of standout young talent, expanded broadcast coverage, and a wave of new fan interest that has outpaced what many longtime league observers expected even a few years ago.
That growth has translated into rising franchise valuations and a wave of expansion interest from new ownership groups eager to enter the league, along with renewed negotiations over media rights deals now commanding considerably higher values than in previous broadcast cycles.
Infrastructure is racing to catch up with demand
Several teams have had to relocate games to larger arenas mid-season to accommodate ticket demand that exceeded their regular home venue’s capacity, a scramble that has highlighted how quickly infrastructure built for a smaller league has had to adapt to a considerably larger and more engaged fan base.
“We built our venues and broadcast deals for the league we had five years ago. The league we have now has genuinely outgrown that infrastructure.”
