Venture Capital Looks Healthy Overall. For Founders Outside AI, It Doesn’t Feel That Way

Venture capital has narrowed sharply toward AI-focused startups, leaving founders in nearly every other sector describing a fundraising environment far harder than the headline venture totals suggest.

Venture Capital Looks Healthy Overall. For Founders Outside AI, It Doesn’t Feel That Way
Founders outside the AI sector describe a fundraising environment considerably tighter than headline venture totals suggest.

Headline venture capital investment totals have remained robust, but a closer look at where that money is actually going reveals a market that has narrowed dramatically: a small number of AI-focused companies now account for a disproportionate share of total dollars invested, while founders building in nearly every other category describe a fundraising environment that feels considerably harder than aggregate figures suggest.

Investors increasingly describe two distinct markets operating side by side: an intensely competitive, high-valuation environment for AI infrastructure and application companies, and a much slower, more selective market for consumer, enterprise software, and other categories that don’t carry an AI narrative front and center.

Founders are adjusting their pitch, not just their product

Some founders building genuinely unrelated products report feeling pressure to frame their pitch around AI capabilities regardless of how central the technology actually is to their core business, simply because it’s become difficult to get meetings otherwise in the current environment.

“The venture totals look healthy in aggregate. Ask any founder outside the AI category how their fundraise actually went, and you’ll get a very different story.”

Whether this concentration eases as the AI investment cycle matures, or becomes a durable feature of how venture capital allocates going forward, remains an open question that founders outside the current hot category are, for now, simply having to navigate around.
